Handpiece repair shops that claim to fix everything usually fix some of it badly. Here is what we turn down, and why.
When a Handpiece Repair Is Worth It, and When to Replace
Not every handpiece that arrives here should be repaired, and we will tell you when.
The economics of a dental handpiece repair are usually simple. A turbine or bearing rebuild that costs a fraction of replacement and buys you years is an easy yes. The same rebuild on a handpiece that has already been through two of them, with a worn shell and a chuck that no longer grips, is money you will spend again inside six months.
The new parts are fine — it is the body around them that is finished.
Age matters less than history. A ten-year-old handpiece that was lubricated properly and never dropped is a better repair candidate than a three-year-old one autoclaved a dozen times a week with no oil. We can usually tell which we are holding within a few minutes of opening it.
If yours falls on the wrong side of that line, you will hear it from us before you have spent anything.

Which Handpiece Repair Do You Need?
A high speed head tells you it is dying long before it quits — a rising whine at full pressure, a bur that will not seat square, water spray that fans wide instead of hitting the cut. Once the bearings load up, the chuck goes soon after. We strip the head, fit a matched bearing and seal set, then prove the speed and concentricity on the gauge before it ships. Rebuilds start at $129.
Most low speed complaints are blamed on the motor and caused by the attachment. A contra angle with a worn nose cone rattles, drags and heats up, while the motor behind it runs fine. Send the pair together and we test them mated — the way your hygienist actually uses them — so you are not quoted motor money for a $145 attachment rebuild.
Electrics fail quietly. There is no dramatic noise, just a little more heat in the hand, a little less torque in the cut, and preps that take longer than they used to. Gearbox, seals and fibre optics are inspected as one unit, because a worn gear set will chew a new bearing in weeks. You get a written figure before any part is ordered.
Scalers get replaced far more often than they get repaired, and usually for no good reason. A tip that has lost its tuning, a blocked water line or a perished seal all read as “the unit is finished” from the operatory. We check flow, frequency and seals, then tell you plainly when a repair makes sense and when it does not.
The cheapest fault on the bench is also the most misdiagnosed. A coupler leaking air at the swivel makes a perfectly good handpiece feel gutless, and a clouded optic rod makes a working light look dead. New o-rings, a fresh swivel and a polished rod change how the handpiece feels immediately. Couplers start at $129.
You get a written estimate before any handpiece repair begins, and the figure you approve is the figure you pay. No extra line items appearing when it ships back.

Do I need a spare handpiece during the repair?
Most practices keep one. Dental handpiece repair turnaround runs about seven business days from the day it arrives, and while we can sometimes move quicker, we would rather you not plan around our best case. If you are down to a single working handpiece, say so when you call and we will tell you honestly whether the timing works.
Do you repair handpiece brands you don’t list?
Usually, yes. The handpiece brands we repair — KaVo, Midwest, Star, NSK, A-dec and W&H among them — are the ones that cross the bench every week, not the limit of what we accept. Call with the model number and we will tell you whether it is something we can source parts for.
How do I know the handpiece repair held?
Every high speed, low speed and electric handpiece is run under load before it ships, and all work carries a 6-month parts and labor warranty. If something is not right when it reaches you, call us — that is exactly what the warranty is for.
Do you repair dental handpieces outside Colorado?
Yes. We are based in Colorado Springs, but a good share of our handpiece repair work is out of state. The prepaid shipping label reaches anywhere in the country and the process is identical wherever you are.
