Common Adec & W&H Repair Issues We Fix

W&H builds a handpiece that will run for years and then punish neglect. Almost everything that reaches us on an Adec traces back to maintenance rather than a fault in the head: the wrong lubricant, no lubricant, or an autoclave cycle run dry. Looked after properly these are among the most reliable heads in any operatory, which is why a failing one is usually telling you something about the maintenance routine rather than the handpiece.

Coupling Leaks

Worn O-rings at the coupling bleed air and water before they cause an obvious failure. You lose cutting power gradually and the spray drifts off the bur, and because it happens over months most practices adapt to it rather than notice it. One of the cheapest repairs we do and one of the most commonly ignored.

Turbine Bearing Wear

Rising pitch, vibration through the grip, or a drop in RPM you can feel on the tooth. On the 96, 97 and 98 heads the bearings go first and are the cheapest thing to put right. Left alone the vibration destroys the chuck seat and turns a bearing job into a full rebuild.

LED Failure on the 98 LED

When the light goes on a 98 LED, the emitter or its driver is almost always the culprit rather than the handpiece body. That makes it a far smaller repair than most practices assume, and well worth diagnosing before you write the handpiece off.

Chuck Wear and Bur Slippage

A bur that creeps down or spins under load means the collet has worn past tolerance. Left in service it damages bur shanks and eventually the head itself. We replace the chuck assembly and pull-test the grip before it goes back in the box.

WA-99 LT Losing Power

The LT is an electric attachment, so lost power usually traces to worn gearing or bearings inside the head rather than the motor driving it. Those are different repairs with very different costs, which is why we diagnose which one it is before we quote you rather than after.

Water Spray Off Target

Corroded or blocked water ports throw the spray off the bur, and that means heat at the prep. We clear the ports, replace the O-rings and verify the spray pattern against the bur before the handpiece is packed.

Box it up. Bubble wrap, sturdy carton, and a note with your practice name and the symptom. On an Adec, send the coupling in the box — a good share of what gets reported as a handpiece fault turns out to be worn coupling O-rings.
We look, then we quote. Inspection is free, and nothing is opened past that point until you have a written price and have approved it.
We rebuild and prove it. Cleaned, rebuilt, then speed, torque and spray pattern checked on the bench, and the LED driver tested if it is a 98 LED.
Back to your operatory. UPS or FedEx, roughly 7 business days from arrival, under the 6-month parts and labor warranty.

Adec & W&H High Speed Turbines

Adec / W&H 96, 97, 98 and 98 LED — the Synea turbine family. The numbers are largely a head-size distinction: the 98 is the standard head and the 97 is the small head, which matters at repair time because the tighter the space around the turbine cartridge, the less margin there is for debris or a bearing fitted even slightly out of tolerance. Every one of these gets the same rebuild — new bearings, new chuck, fresh O-rings, a full clean and a speed test before it ships back.

Adec & W&H Electric Attachments

Adec WK-93 and WG-99 — 1:5 speed increasing contra angles from the Synea Vision and Synea Fusion lines. As with the turbines, the model number tracks head size, and the smaller WK-93 head is the less forgiving of the two. We rebuild the gear train and bearings as a set and verify torque under load, because on a speed increaser torque fades before the speed does.

Adec / W&H WA-99 LT — the earlier-generation 1:5 lighted contra angle. These are still in daily use in a lot of operatories, and a power complaint on one usually traces to worn gearing or bearings rather than the motor driving it. We diagnose which before we quote you.

Couplings and Light Sources

A large share of what looks like a handpiece fault on an Adec chair is actually the connection. Worn coupling O-rings bleed air and water, which shows up as lost cutting power and a spray that will not sit on the bur — an inexpensive fix that is easy to keep ignoring while performance quietly drops. On the LED models the emitter and its driver fail far more often than the handpiece body does, which usually makes it a cheaper repair than practices expect. We test the coupling and the light path as part of every Adec job, not as an extra.
