Common KaVo Handpiece Repair Issues We Fix

On our bench, bearings are what fail on a KaVo. Rarely the body, rarely the chuck first — the bearings go, and everything downstream follows. Caught while it is still only a change in noise, it is a bearing job. Left until the vibration has worked on the chuck seat, it becomes a full rebuild. That is why we tell KaVo owners to act on a new sound rather than wait for lost performance.

Chuck Wear

Worn chucks let burs slip or wobble mid-procedure, which slows down every prep. We replace the chuck assembly with OEM components and verify bur retention before it leaves our bench.

Worn Bearings

Worn bearings cause noise, vibration, or a drop in RPM that you can feel through the handpiece. We rebuild the turbine cartridge with new bearings and balance it so it runs quiet at full speed again.

Fiber Optic Gone Dim

The bulb on a KaVo does not live in the handpiece — it sits in the MULTIflex coupler. What is inside the handpiece is a fiber optic rod, and that clouds, chips or cracks with repeated autoclave cycles until the light reaching the bur is a fraction of what it was. If the light has faded gradually, it is the rod and we replace it. If it has gone out completely, check the coupler bulb first and save yourself a repair.

Water Leaks

MULTIflex coupling and swivel connector leaks lead to air and water loss, which shows up as a hiss or a slow drip at the head. We reseal or replace the coupling with OEM parts and pressure-test it before it ships back to you.

Loss of Cutting Power

A handpiece that spins freely in the air but bogs down in dentin has usually lost turbine efficiency or is leaking air upstream of the head. We pressure-test the full air path, rebuild the turbine, and confirm the head holds torque under load rather than just sounding right off the tooth.

Overheating at the Head

Heat at the head almost always traces back to bearings running dry or debris packed into the turbine. Left alone it damages the housing seats and turns a bearing job into a full rebuild. We strip the head, clear the contamination, replace the bearings, and run a sustained heat check before it ships.

We look, then we quote. Inspection is free. Nothing gets opened further until you have a written price in front of you and have said yes.
We rebuild and prove it. Cleaned, rebuilt, then speed, torque and spray pattern verified on the bench — and on the fibre optic models, light output checked against a known-good head.
Back to your operatory. UPS or FedEx, about 7 business days from arrival, under the 6-month parts and labor warranty.
