Never lubricate a LubeFree turbine. Not once, not “just a little,” not as a precaution. Its bearings are sealed and lubricated at the factory, and a single oiling breaks that seal permanently. If you are not certain which type of turbine is in a handpiece, find out before you oil it — do not guess.
That is the whole rule. Everything below is why it matters and how to avoid getting caught out.
Why one oiling is permanent
A LubeFree turbine runs on sealed ceramic bearings, lubricated at the factory and designed never to be oiled again. Oil it once and those bearings are compromised — and from that point on it has to keep being oiled for the rest of its life. It is the single thing we most often see shorten a good Star head.
A conventional turbine is the opposite: open bearings that need oil before every sterilization cycle. Skip it and they run dry, heat up and seize.
Same size. Same head. Nearly identical on a tray. Opposite in the one way that matters.
The trap: SWL does not mean “lubricated”
On a Star 430, the letters describe the head, not the turbine.
- SW is the non-fiber-optic head.
- SWL is the fiber-optic head. The L stands for light.
Both are sold with either a lubricated or a LubeFree turbine inside.
So an SWL is not a “lubricated” handpiece and an SW is not a “dry” one. The model number tells you whether the handpiece carries a light, and nothing at all about how to maintain it. That single letter is responsible for a lot of the ruined turbines that reach our bench.
Can you tell by looking?
Not from the outside, and not chairside.
There is a physical indicator, but it is on the turbine itself: the O-rings. On Star turbines, a single O-ring usually means a lubricated turbine and a double O-ring usually means LubeFree.
Two important limits on that.
First, you have to pull the turbine to see it. The O-rings are not visible with the turbine in the head. That makes this a technician’s check, not something to attempt at the chair — see below.
Second: usually, but check. It varies between manufacturers, and there are exceptions within Star itself. Counting O-rings on a KaVo, NSK, Midwest, Bien-Air, Brasseler, Lares or W&H turbine will not answer the question at all.
So: the O-rings narrow it down. The part number settles it.
Please do not do your own handpiece repairs
We say this to practices constantly, and we say it against our own short-term interest, because we would rather see a handpiece for a turbine service than for the damage a DIY attempt caused.
Pulling and reseating a turbine looks simple. It is not:
- The head is easy to damage. Turbines seat to a tolerance. Forced, cross-threaded or over-tightened, the damage is to the head — a far more expensive part than the turbine.
- The wrong cartridge fits. Plenty of turbines will physically go into a head they were never made for. It will run. It will not run right, and it will not run long.
- Counterfeit and gray-market cartridges are common and are difficult to identify without handling a lot of them.
- You lose the record. The whole problem this article describes — nobody knowing what is in the handpiece — gets worse every time a turbine is changed without being written down.
- It voids the warranty on the work, ours and everyone else’s.
A turbine service on the bench costs less than a head. Send it out, and ask for the turbine type to be recorded against the serial number while it is there.
How to actually know
In order of reliability:
- The turbine cartridge part number. The definitive answer, read by whoever has the turbine out.
- Your purchase or repair records. If you can trace the last turbine fitted to that specific handpiece, the invoice says which type went in.
- Ask whoever last serviced it. A repair lab records what it fitted. We do, against the serial number.
- Send it in. A handpiece technician can tell you in minutes.
What does not work: the model number, the age of the instrument, or assuming everything in the drawer matches because it was bought together. Handpieces get repaired and turbines get swapped, so a handpiece bought as one type may legitimately be carrying the other type today.
What it costs to get it wrong
Oiling a LubeFree turbine compromises the seal on the first application. It keeps running, so cause and failure look unrelated. The result is a turbine that now needs oil forever and will not last the way it should.
Not oiling a lubricated turbine is faster and more obvious. Loud, then hot, then seized — sometimes within days of the first symptom.
Both end in a turbine replacement. Neither is covered by “we have always done it this way.”
Fix it once, per handpiece
Take one handpiece, establish what is in it, mark it, move to the next. It is a one-time exercise per instrument and it ends the problem permanently.
- Mark the handpiece, not the drawer. A tag or engraving on the instrument survives being moved, borrowed and sterilized.
- Ask your repair lab to record it. When a turbine goes in, that type should be written against that serial number so the answer is never lost again.
And until you know: do not oil it. An unoiled lubricated turbine can be caught and rebuilt. An oiled LubeFree turbine cannot be undone.
Frequently asked questions
Can you oil a LubeFree handpiece?
No. Never. The bearings are sealed and lubricated at the factory, a single oiling breaks the seal, and the turbine cannot be returned to maintenance-free operation afterward.
What happens if I oiled a LubeFree turbine by mistake?
It will keep running, but the seal is compromised. From that point it has to be oiled like a conventional turbine and it will not last as long as it should. If it is already noisy or running hot, have it looked at before it seizes.
How can I tell if my handpiece is LubeFree?
On a Star, the O-ring count usually indicates it — one for lubricated, two for LubeFree — but the O-rings are only visible with the turbine removed, it has exceptions, and it does not transfer to other brands. The O-rings narrow it down; the turbine cartridge part number settles it. Ask your repair lab rather than opening the head yourself.
Should a dental practice change its own turbines?
No. Turbines seat to a tolerance and the head is the expensive part to damage. The wrong cartridge will often physically fit and run badly, counterfeit cartridges are common, and an undocumented turbine change is how a practice loses track of whether a handpiece is LubeFree in the first place. Send it to a handpiece technician and ask for the turbine type to be recorded against the serial number.
Does SWL mean the handpiece is lubricated?
No. On a Star 430 the L in SWL stands for light — SWL is the fiber-optic head, SW is the non-optic head. Both are supplied with either lubricated or LubeFree turbines.
Is a LubeFree turbine better than a lubricated one?
Neither is better in the abstract. LubeFree removes a daily step that is easy to get wrong; lubricated turbines are cheaper to service. What matters far more is that the handpiece is maintained the way it was built to be maintained.
