Common Star Handpiece Repair Issues We Fix
The 430 LubeFree is engineered never to be oiled, and that is the single thing we most often see shorten a good Star head. Oil it once and the sealed ceramic bearings are compromised — and from that point on it has to keep being oiled for the rest of its life. It is not a weakness in the design, it is a maintenance mismatch, and it happens because a LubeFree turbine and a lubricated one look near enough identical on the tray.
One thing worth knowing, because it catches out even experienced practices: on a Star, the L in SWL stands for light, not lubricant. SW is the non-optic head and SWL is the fiber-optic one — and both are sold with either a lubricated or a LubeFree turbine. So the badge on the handpiece tells you nothing about how it should be maintained. If you are not certain which turbine you have, tell us and we will identify it before we touch it.

What usually fails: sealed ceramic bearings — they must never see oil. Oil it once and the sealed bearings are compromised, and from that point on it has to keep being oiled for the rest of its life.
The rebuild: serviced dry as designed; upstream air line checked for oil.

Bubble wrap, sturdy carton, and a note with your practice name and the symptom. On a Star, tell us if you know whether the turbine is lubricated or LubeFree — and if you do not, say so, because guessing wrong is how these come back twice.
Inspection is free, and nothing is opened past that point until you have a written price and have approved it.
Cleaned, rebuilt, then speed, torque and spray pattern checked on the bench before the box is taped.
Back to you by UPS or FedEx — 2–3 business days on the bench, under the 6-month parts and labor warranty. Transit each way is the carrier’s clock, typically a couple of days in each direction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Star built the 430 and Titan lines to take years of chairside use, and most of what reaches our bench is wear rather than outright failure. The same handful of issues recur: contaminated bearings on lube-free heads, worn turbine bearings on the lubricated heads, gear wear in the Titan range, and chucks that stop releasing cleanly. Our technicians open every Star handpiece by hand and rebuild it to spec, so speed, torque and spray pattern all come back correct.
Do you repair high-speed, low-speed, and electric Star handpieces?
Yes. Whether it is a high-speed, low-speed or electric Star handpiece, every repair ships back with our full 6-month parts and labor warranty and a free diagnostic estimate up front. We send you a free prepaid USPS shipping label to get it to our office, with no minimum order value, and return it via UPS or FedEx. 2–3 business days on the bench. Add transit each way — typically a couple of days in each direction on the prepaid label, though that part is the carrier’s clock, not ours. We will also work on handpieces still under manufacturer warranty if you would rather not wait on the factory.
Why do practices switch to you from a big-box repair lab?
The lube-free question is the honest answer here. A general repair lab that services every Star head the same way will oil a sealed-bearing 430 without thinking about it, and you will be back with the same handpiece inside a year. We identify which family your head belongs to before anything else, and service it accordingly.
What's covered under the warranty?
Every Star repair carries a full 6-month parts and labor warranty, and you get a free diagnostic estimate before any work begins — you will never receive an invoice you did not approve first. The warranty covers the components we replaced and the labor to fit them. If something is not right when the handpiece arrives back, call us at (720) 998-2820 and we will make it right. If we determine a handpiece cannot be economically repaired, there is no repair charge at all: a flat $29 covers shipping and handling and it goes back to you.
What parts do you use on Star repairs?
We rebuild every handpiece to specification, so fit, torque and spray pattern match how it left the factory. On Star that matters most in the bearings — a sealed bearing fitted to a lube-free head has to be the correct sealed part, not a lubricated equivalent that happens to fit.
