What High Speed Repairs Cost

Turbine Rebuild Starts at $129

New bearings, chuck and O-rings in your existing housing, cleaned and speed-tested before it ships.

New Turbine $159–199

The whole cartridge replaced when the seat or housing is past rebuilding. Priced by model at the estimate.

Nothing owed if unrepairable

No repair charge at all. A flat $29 covers shipping and handling and it comes back to you.

Start With the Symptom

On an air turbine the bearings fail before anything else, and they announce it early. A high speed handpiece is quiet and smooth when healthy, so the first change you notice — a rising pitch, a buzz through the grip, a bur that wanders — is almost always the bearings. Act on it then and it is a bearing job. Leave it and the vibration works on the chuck seat and the housing until it becomes a full rebuild.

The pitch has risen or it sounds rough

Cause: turbine bearings on the way out. This is the earliest and cheapest point to catch a high speed handpiece.
Repair: new bearings, chuck and O-rings, then speed-tested. Rebuild.

You can feel vibration through the grip

Cause: bearings worn far enough to be out of balance. Every hour from here damages the chuck seat.
Repair: full turbine rebuild, or a new turbine if the seat has gone. Rebuild or new turbine.

The bur slips, wanders or will not seat

Cause: worn collet in the chuck, or a push-button mechanism that has lost its spring.
Repair: chuck assembly replaced and pull-tested before it ships. Rebuild.

It bogs down cutting but spins fine off the tooth

Cause: a tired turbine or a leaking air path. Plenty of free speed, no power under load.
Repair: we pressure-test the air path and rebuild whatever is bleeding. Rebuild.

The light has faded or gone out

Cause: the fibre optic rod clouds with autoclave cycles. If it is out completely, check the coupler bulb first — that is where the light source lives, not in the handpiece.
Repair: rod or bundle replaced, output checked. Rebuild.

The head runs hot at the prep

Cause: blocked water ports, worn O-rings, or bearings dragging. Heat at the bur is the symptom you should never work around.
Repair: ports cleared, O-rings replaced, spray pattern pressure-tested. Rebuild.

How to Send Us Your High Speed Handpiece

Five steps, and four of them are ours. The part you handle should take minutes.

  1. Ask for a label. Call (720) 998-2820 or use the estimate form. A prepaid USPS label reaches you the same business day, no minimum order, nothing to pay up front.
  2. Box it up. Bubble wrap, sturdy carton, and a note with your practice name and the symptom. Tell us whether the chuck is push-button or lever, and on a Star whether it is SWL or Lube Free — that changes what we pull first.
  3. We look, then we quote. Inspection is free, and nothing is opened past that point until you have a written price and have approved it.
  4. We rebuild and prove it. Cleaned, rebuilt, then speed, torque and spray pattern checked on the bench, plus light output on fibre optic heads.
  5. Back to your operatory. UPS or FedEx, roughly 7 business days from arrival, under the 6-month parts and labor warranty.

High Speed Repairs by Model

Rebuilds start at $129 and hold at that price across brands. New turbines run $159–199 depending on the model. A rebuild replaces bearings, chuck and O-rings in your existing housing; a new turbine is the whole cartridge, which is the better value once the seat has been damaged by vibration. We tell you which yours needs before any work begins.

Rebuild or new turbine?

A rebuild reuses your turbine housing and replaces what wears inside it — bearings, chuck, O-rings. It is the right call while the housing is still true, which is most of the time if the handpiece came in when it first got noisy.

A new turbine replaces the whole cartridge. That becomes the better value once vibration has worked on the chuck seat, because a fresh bearing set in a damaged seat will not hold. We make that call at the estimate stage and tell you which one you are paying for before anything proceeds.

Lubricated and lube-free are not interchangeable

Star runs both: the 430 SWL is lubricated, the 430 Lube Free uses sealed ceramic bearings that must never be oiled. They look near enough identical on a tray. Oil a lube-free head once and the bearings are compromised.

If you are not certain which you have, say so when you send it and we will identify it before we touch it. It is the single most common way a good Star head gets shortened, and it is entirely avoidable.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions practices ask most before sending a high speed handpiece in.

How much does high speed handpiece repair cost?

Turbine rebuilds start at $129 and stay there whatever the brand. A new turbine runs $159 to $199 depending on the model, and is quoted once we have seen the housing. You always get a written price before any work begins, and if a handpiece turns out not to be worth repairing there is no repair charge: a flat $29 covers shipping and handling.

Rebuild while the housing is still true, which is most of the time if it came in when it first got noisy. Replace once vibration has worked on the chuck seat, because fresh bearings in a damaged seat will not hold and you will be sending it back. You do not have to decide — we inspect it free and tell you which it needs.

About 7 business days from the day it reaches our bench. We will tell you at the estimate stage if a part needs sourcing and that timeline is going to move. Getting it to us is free on our prepaid USPS label; the return trip goes out via UPS or FedEx.

Quality replacement parts matched to your specific model rather than close-enough substitutes, and we rebuild to specification so fit, torque, light output and spray pattern match how the handpiece left the factory. On turbines the bearing spec matters more than anything — an approximate bearing runs for a few weeks and then takes the head with it.
