NSK Handpiece Repair Specialists
Why NSK Owners Trust Us
Torque fades first. We rebuild what's worn.
On an NSK it is the transmission that goes first, not the bearings — we have been rebuilding 1:5 gear trains since 2019, part of 23,000 repairs for 400+ dental practices nationwide, every one warranty-backed.

High-Speed Handpiece Rebuilds
Brasseler NL9000 and NSK Z micro turbine rebuild: bearings and O-rings replaced, chuck inspected, then speed-tested — with extra care on the micro head, where clearances are tightest.Low-Speed Attachments
Contra angles and attachments stripped to the gear train and rebuilt, then run under load, because on a speed increaser torque fades long before RPM does.Electric Attachment Handpieces
Ti-Max and X-series electrics: the basic rebuild replaces the shaft gear or head gear and bearings, plus springs, spacers and O-rings — then torque is verified against your console spec.Every quote includes parts, labor, cleaning, and a full performance test, and every repair carries our full 6-month parts and labor warranty. Prices below cover the most common NSK repairs; see our complete pricing menu, broken out by repair type and brand, on our Services page. Whether you need high-speed handpiece repair, low-speed handpiece repair, or electric handpiece repair, our NSK handpiece repair pricing stays flat and transparent, so you always know the cost of dental handpiece repair before you ship a unit to our bench.
Common NSK Handpiece Repair Issues We Fix
NSK is the brand where the transmission fails before anything else. On most makes the bearings go first; on NSK it is the gear train. The 1:5 increasing transmissions are built to tolerances most manufacturers do not attempt, and that same precision is what makes them unforgiving once wear starts. It shows up as torque, not speed — the console still reads normal while the bur stalls in dense dentin. If it feels slower than the display says it is, that is the transmission talking.
Torque Loss Before Speed Loss
The Ti-Max and X-series attachments run a 1:5 increasing gear train, and as those gears and bearings wear, torque drops well before RPM does. Your console still reports normal speed while the bur stalls in dense dentin. That gap between what the display says and what your hand feels is the classic early NSK warning.
Bearing Noise in a Quiet Head
A healthy NSK head is close to silent, so any new whine or buzz is worth acting on the same week. Tolerances are tight enough that debris from one failing bearing scores the surrounding surfaces quickly, and a straightforward bearing job becomes a full rebuild if it waits.
Mini-Head Wear on the 85 Series
The X85 and X85L mini heads run smaller bearings in a tighter envelope than their standard-head counterparts. They buy you better posterior access, but they are less forgiving of debris and over-lubrication, and they show wear sooner. We service them to the smaller spec rather than treating them like a standard head.
Chuck Slipping Under Load
Worn collets let the bur creep down or spin in the chuck part-way through a crown prep. On the push-button autochuck heads this is a new turbine with a new chuck ($159) rather than a new handpiece, and we verify grip with a pull test before it goes back in the box.
LED and Fiber Optic Failure
The Z95L and the other optic-equipped models lose illumination as the Cellular Glass Optics clouds or the emitter degrades. Because it fades gradually, most practices compensate for months without noticing. We replace the bundle or emitter and check output against a known-good unit.
Blocked Spray Ports
NSK routes its four-port spray through finer internal passages than larger heads, so scale and debris block them sooner. A misdirected or dead port means heat at the prep. We flush the water and air lines, clear the ports, replace the O-rings and check the spray pattern at spec pressure before it ships.
How to Send Us Your NSK Handpiece
Five steps, and four of them are ours. The part you handle should take minutes.
-
Ask for a label
Book your repair on our Book My Repair page and a prepaid USPS label reaches you the same business day — no minimum order, nothing to pay up front.
-
Box it up
Bubble wrap, sturdy carton, and a note with your practice name and the symptom. On an NSK attachment, tell us which motor and console it runs on — that is what we set the finished torque and speed against.
-
We look, then we quote
Inspection is free, and nothing is opened past that point until you have a written price and have approved it.
-
We rebuild and test it
Cleaned, rebuilt, then speed, torque and spray pattern checked on the bench — including the four-port spray, which blocks sooner on NSK than on larger heads.
-
Back to your operatory
Back to you by UPS or FedEx — 2–3 business days on the bench, under the 6-month parts and labor warranty. Transit each way is the carrier's clock, typically a couple of days in each direction.
NSK Models We Service
Below are the NSK models we service most often. NSK builds to tight tolerances, which is what makes these handpieces so good and also what makes approximate repair work show up immediately, so every unit is rebuilt to spec and tested before it ships. If yours is not listed, reach us through our contact page — this covers our most common work, not everything we repair.
We rebuild every major handpiece brand on the same terms and the same bench. If your operatory runs more than one, see our KaVo, Midwest, Star, A-dec and W&H, Lares, Bien-Air, Beyes, Brasseler, Young and Impact Air 45 handpiece repair pages, or browse our dental handpiece repair overview. NSK contra angles, prophy heads and the micro motors behind them are covered on our low speed handpiece and motor repair page.
| Model | What usually fails | What the rebuild includes |
|---|---|---|
| Ti-Max X95L, X95 | Gear and bearing wear — standard-head 1:5, rated to 200,000 rpm | Worn gears and bearings replaced as needed |
| Ti-Max Z95L | Head wear and tired seals on the current-generation 1:5 | Head rebuild, seals renewed, speed and torque verified against spec |
| Ti-Max X85L, X85 | Mini-head bearings — smaller parts, less room for error | Gear train rebuild with bearings and chuck, run under load to confirm torque |
| Ti-Max X-SG20L (20:1 surgical) | Reduction gearing under implant torque | Gears, bearings and seals to the reduction spec, torque tested at surgical speeds |
| Ti-Max Z micro | Turbine cartridge — debris and over-lubrication show up fast | Full turbine overhaul, four-port spray cleared and pattern-tested |
| Brasseler NL9000 | Turbine wear — cross-references directly to the NSK X-series | Full turbine overhaul on the same bench: bearings and seals, chuck inspected |
1:5 gear trains, chuck inspection and torque verification under load are covered on our electric handpiece repair page. NSK contra angles, prophy heads and the micro motors behind them are on our low speed handpiece and motor repair page.
Frequently Asked Questions
NSK builds to tolerances most brands do not attempt, and that is exactly why the same handful of issues come up again and again: worn 1:5 gear trains, bearings that went quiet-to-noisy in a week, clouded optics and blocked spray ports. Below are the questions practices ask us most before sending an NSK handpiece in.
Yes. We service the whole NSK range — the Ti-Max and X-series electric attachments including the Ti-Max X95L, X85L, X95, X85 and Z95L, the X-SG20L 20:1 surgical contra angle, and the air-driven Z micro and the Brasseler NL9000. Every repair ships back with our full 6-month parts and labor warranty and a free diagnostic estimate up front. We send you a free prepaid USPS shipping label to get it to our office, with no minimum order value.
We use quality replacement parts matched to your specific model rather than close-enough substitutes, and on NSK that distinction matters more than on most brands. The 1:5 gear trains and the mini-head bearings run to tolerances where an approximate part will run for a few weeks and then take the head with it. If you want to know exactly what is going into your handpiece, ask through our contact page and we will tell you before we order it.
Every NSK repair carries a full 6-month parts and labor warranty, and you get a free diagnostic estimate before any work begins — you will never receive an invoice you did not approve first. If a handpiece turns out not to be worth repairing, there is no repair charge at all: a flat $29 covers shipping and handling and it goes back to you.
2–3 business days on the bench. Add transit each way — typically a couple of days in each direction on the prepaid label, though that part is the carrier’s clock, not ours. We don’t ship it back until it has run under load, and if a part has to be sourced we tell you at the estimate stage. Getting it to us is free on our prepaid USPS label; the return trip goes out via UPS or FedEx.
Yes. The NLZ is the motor itself, not the attachment, so it falls under our Electric Motor Overhaul from $849: bearings and internal wear parts replaced as needed, then run under load before it ships back.
Yes. A high speed turbine rebuild is $129, or from $159 with a new turbine. Bearings and O-rings are replaced and the chuck inspected, then the head is run under load.
Almost always the 1:5 gear train. Worn gears and bearings are replaced as needed and seals renewed, then speed and torque are verified against the motor you run. From $229.
Yes. Fiber optic rod replacement is from $159, and when a turbine rebuild is needed at the same time both are done in the one visit.
